Canaryseed Development Commission
The Canary Seed Development Commission of Saskatchewan is dedicated to advancing the Canaryseed industry by coordinating research and expanding market use for the benefit of growers and stakeholders. Since obtaining novel food approval for dehulled glabrous hairless Canaryseed in 2016, the Commission has been actively promoting its use in human food, branding it as "alpiste" to distinguish it from birdseed.
In collaboration with Synthesis AgriFood Network, the Commission is set to engage food manufacturers in 2025 to explore the incorporation of alpiste into various food products. Additionally, for the 2023-24 fiscal year, Canaryseed producers can claim a percentage of their contributions as a qualifying SRED expenditure on their tax returns, further supporting the industry's growth.
