Wikwemikong Health Centre
Wikwemikong Health Centre in Northeastern Manitoulin and Islands, Ontario, offers holistic community well-being through traditional and western health services. Since its opening on July 11th, 1988, the center has aimed to provide access to both traditional and western healthcare opportunities to the community. Most services were transferred to the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve in 1994, where care is offered in both the Native language and English to cater to all community members.
The Health Centre's shield, known as the House of Healing, is a replica of the Medicine Shield used by the Wabanowin Medicine Society of the Odawa tribes. Symbolizing the universe, the shield features the Thunderbird representing the Great Spirit and the Mishibishiw, signifying the underworld. The triangular heart of the Thunderbird embodies the three components of Man - Mind, Body, and Spirit. It serves as a symbol of health and wellness, especially with the establishment of the Medicine Lodge within the Health Centre Complex.
