Aroland Band & Council Aroland
Aroland First Nation, located in Aroland, Ontario, is dedicated to providing education, health, cultural, and economic opportunities for its members while safeguarding its traditional territory. With a history deeply rooted in stewardship of the land, Aroland First Nation's ancestors engaged in hunting, fishing, cultivation, and gathering long before European contact.
Established around 1900 through involvement in the fur trade with the Hudson's Bay Company, Aroland First Nation gained reserve status under the Canadian Indian Act in 1985. Currently, the community, part of the Matawa First Nations Management and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, consists of around 700 band members, with approximately 400 residing in the immediate area and others spread across locations like Thunder Bay, Geraldton, and Toronto.
For any activities within its Traditional Territory, including mineral exploration or infrastructure development, Aroland First Nation requests proponents to seek authorization. The community is proactive in addressing misinformation and protecting its name and image, emphasizing the importance of respectful engagement and communication with the Band Office for any inquiries or collaborations.
