Halalt First Nation
The Halalt First Nation originates from the historic village of xel ltxw, meaning "marked houses," noted for its decorated houseposts and once located in the Cowichan Valley. Over time, the community relocated to Willy Island and later to the Westholme reserve, focusing on maintaining its cultural heritage and governance alongside collaborations with local governments and industries.
Led by Chief James Thomas and council members, the Halalt First Nation is committed to addressing critical issues such as housing, social and economic developments, treaty negotiations, fisheries, and forestry. Their aim is to ensure that the perspectives and needs of both on and off-reserve members are considered in the strategic management of natural resources in their traditional territory.
