The Virgil Chapel was discovered in 1973 during the construction of the subway and integrated into the Stephansplatz subway station as the location of the museum. The underground chapel is one of the best preserved Gothic interiors in Vienna. It was built around 1220/30 as a substructure for a planned chapel building in early Gothic style. Around 1246 the chapel was equipped with joint paintings and wheel crosses in the niches. Later, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene was built above it (the ground plan of this little church is still visible in the pavement of St. Stephen's Square).
